What Is A Dental Emergency?

While there are many issues that clearly need immediate attention from a professional, some are less obvious. Common dental emergencies include things like:

  • Broken or fractured tooth
  • Sharp pain or sudden toothache
  • Denture repair
  • Trauma to your teeth
  • Infections or abscesses

Even if there is no pain associated with your particular problem, it can still be disruptive enough to need attention sooner than a regularly scheduled visit would allow.

Purely cosmetic problems can also be an emergency in the right circumstances. A good rule of thumb is: if you don't think you can (or should) comfortably wait a few days to have it addressed, then give us a call!

It's definitely better to err on the side of caution, and we'll be happy to advise you over the phone.

Emergency Services

We're pleased to offer a wide array of services on an unplanned or emergency basis. Here are some of our most popular:

Toothaches are never fun, but when it's severe enough to disrupt your everyday life, it's a clear sign of something that needs to be addressed immediately.

There are many possible causes for toothache, some of which are more urgent than others (but all of these require attention). Some common ones include:

  • Gum Disease
  • Tooth Decay
  • Fractured Tooth
  • A dental abscess

What may start as minor aches can progress to more serious pain if left untreated, so even if it's not severe enough to warrant an emergency visit today, please make sure you schedule a time to get it checked out as soon as it's convenient.

What To Expect

During an emergency toothache consultation, the first step is to figure out what's causing the issue. Depending on your symptoms, this may only require a simple visual inspection, or it may need X-Rays.

Once identified, Dr. Hain will provide you with a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses both any short-term relief that can be provided (on the day of the consultation), as well as long-term steps needed to resolve the issue for good (typically during a follow-up visit).

A broken or fractured tooth is a common cause of tooth pain, and definitely on the list of emergency dental problems. Even when the pain isn't bad, if there are cosmetic or functional issues you'd like to have addressed, we're more than happy to see you on an emergency basis.

Some common causes for broken or fractured teeth include:

  • Biting hard foods
  • Trauma (e.g car accident or sports)
  • Extreme temperature changes
  • Pressure due to teeth grinding

What To Expect

When you come in with a broken or fractured tooth, we'll start by examining it to help determine treatment options. Once the exam is completed, we'll prepare a comprehensive treatment plan that works for your unique circumstances.

Typical options for broken or fractured tooth repair include fillings, veneers, onlays, and crowns. Some of these options can be completed same-day, while others require multiple visits.

Whether a permanent fix can be put in place that day or not, we'll make sure you're at least provided with a temporary solution before your emergency appointment is over.

Though rare and almost always a last resort, tooth extractions are performed on an emergency basis.

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), and our experience, the 3 most common causes for extractions are trauma, crowding, or untreated disease.

Crowding wouldn't typically result in an emergency visit, but trauma or untreated disease very well could.

What To Expect

During an Emergency consultation, we'll work to determine if an extraction is truly needed, or if there are any acceptable alternatives that will preserve the natural tooth.

If necessary, we'll perform the extraction or refer you to a specialist. We'll also come up with a post-extraction regimen to help ensure a speedy recovery. This will typically involve a follow up visit to ensure everything is healing as expected.

Quality Dentures and Bridges can last for decades, but almost always require repair or replacement sooner or later. If your bridge or denture breaks unexpectedly, it can be a big headache, with both cosmetic and functional impact.

We're more than happy to consult on bridge or denture repair on an emergency basis if you feel it's necessary.

What To Expect

As with all of the services we provide, the first step in an emergency Denture or Bridge Repair Consultation is to evaluate the situation. We'll inspect the Bridge, Denture, and any abutment teeth to determine the best course of action.

Once that's done, we'll provide you with a comprehensive plan that's specifically tailored to you and your unique needs. Some repairs can be performed on the same day, while others (e.g. replacement) may require follow up visits.

Infections in the tooth can become even more serious emergencies if not treated. A dental abscess is an infection in the center of the tooth. As your body fights the infection it creates pus which leads to pain and swelling in the cheeks and gums.

Without treatment, the infection can worsen and spread through the jaw, neck, and head. If you believe you have a tooth infection, it's critical that you focus on treatment before the problem gets any worse.

What To Expect

As with any treatment, we'll begin by verifying determining the underlying cause of the infection and work out a plan to address it. Treatment typically involves draining the infected area to reduce swelling, addressing the source (often via root canal or extraction), and treatment with antibiotics.

In addition to treatment for the immediate problem, we'll help you work out a long term care plan that can help you maintain your oral health going forward.

If you have a filling or crown that has fallen out, it can lead to pain that you'll want to have treated urgently. If you're able to locate the crown, definitely be sure to bring it with you to the appointment.

What To Expect

We'll start with a quick review of the problem tooth and the condition of the crown assuming you were able to find it. If everything is in good shape, we should be able to reseat it that day. If its a filling, a new one can be placed on that visit as well.

What happens during emergency dental treatment?
