What Are Dental Crowns?

Illustration of A Dental Crown

A dental crown is an artificial cover placed over your natural tooth structure to help it look and function better.

Crowns are a great option to treat a variety of conditions including:

  • Cracked or broken teeth.
  • Missing tooth (via Dental Bridge).
  • Protecting tooth structure after a root canal.
  • Cavities that are too big for a filling.
  • Discolored or misshapen teeth.

We use premium quality dental crowns that are custom made by a Master Ceramist to match the shade and shape of your natural teeth so they fit your smile perfectly.

What Types Of Crowns Do We Offer?

Crowns come in different materials that have their own properties. The most notable are: cost, aesthetics, and durability.

We work with Porcelain, Zirconia, and Gold most frequently, and will work with you to choose the most suitable for your needs.

We offer single crowns, bridges, partial crowns, as well as Implant Crowns and Onlays.

High quality restorative and cosmetic treatments are a central part of Dr. Hain's practice philosophy, and we work with a Master Ceramist to help you get the best look, feel, and function possible.

What happens during dental crown treatment?

1. Preparation

The first step is to evaluate and prepare the tooth. This includes: 1) shaping it 2) taking impressions for the lab 3) placing a temp crown to keep the position of the tooth while the permanent is prepared.

2. Production

Our master ceramist partner will work with the model we create from the impression to build a replacement tooth that is the right size, shape, and color to perfectly fit your smile. This usually takes about 2 weeks.

3. Placement

Once the permanent crown is back from the lab, we'll meet 1 more time to cement it in place. We'll make any adjustments needed to make it look and feel perfect.

Dental Crown F.A.Q.

When we meet in person at our San Francisco, CA office, we'll go over treatment options in detail and make sure you have all the information you need to make a decision. Here are a few of the most frequently asked questions as a starting point for our face to face conversation.

The most common materials used for crowns are Porcelain, Zirconia, and Gold. Porcelain tends to be a good fit for most people.

As far as the different types go, we offer single crowns, bridges, partial crowns, as well as Implant Crowns and Onlays.

A dental crown can treat a number of conditions, and provides different benefits depending on how it's placed. In general, the benefits come from one of 2 categories: either aesthetic (making your smile look better), or functional (e.g. reinforcing your natural tooth structure or as part of an implant).

Dental crowns require the same regular maintenance as your natural teeth. Namely, regular flossing, brushing, and dental checkups.

Dental crowns have an average life-span of 5-10 years or more.

Fees can vary widely based on materials, how it's placed, used and any other procedures required (e.g. root canal or crown lengthening). Payments can be spaced out over the course of the treatment, which lasts several weeks, and most insurance will cover a portion of the cost.
